Design Requirements
All casting, steel and aluminum products designated "Heavy Duty" will be designed for AASHTO HS20-44 highway wheel loading. Many of the products in this catalog are suitable for heavier loads such as AASHTO H25. Please call if your project requires higher load carrying capabilities, such as those created by airports or forklifts and other industrial applications, and we will be pleased to recommend the product best suited to your project.

Product Condition
Buyer agrees and acknowledges that seller has no control whatsoever over the final application or installation of products herein set forth for sale. Such application or installation is and of itself the sum and substance of the fitness of the products in the final use. The buyer, its agent or assignee agrees to indemnify and save seller harmless from any liability or obligation incurred by the buyer to persons injured directly or indirectly in the connection with the use of such products.

Guarantee
We will replace any casting designated Heavy Duty and intended for unrestricted highway use that has been properly installed and broken in normal service, free of charge, FOB Cicero, NY, after receipt of the broken casting.

Recommended Specifications

Casting Materials

• General
  All castings shall be manufactured by Syracuse Castings or approved equal and shall be true to pattern in form and dimensions with component parts fitting together in a satisfactory manner. Cast iron shall conform to ASTM A48 Class 30B or Class 35. Ductile iron castings shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A 536.

• Workmanship
  Iron castings shall be free from pouring faults, sponginess, cracks, blowholes and other defects in positions affecting their strength and value for service intended.

• Machining
  Heavy duty, round manhole frames and covers or grates are furnished with machined horizontal bearing surfaces. All other types of castings are furnished with a cast bearing surface unless specified otherwise.

• Tolerances
  Dimensional tolerance shall not exceed +/– 1/16th inch per foot, and casting weights shall not exceed +/– 5%.

• Coatings
  Cast iron is furnished unpainted.

Fabricated Materials

• Steel Products
  Steel products shall be manufactured by Syracuse Castings or approved equal and shall fit component parts in a satisfactory manner. Steel shall conform to ASTM A36 (36KSI Yield Strength), or ASTM A 529 Grade 50 (50KSI Yield Strength) as required to achieve adequate design strength.

• Workmanship
  Welding or splicing of any member of the frame or grate, other than welds shown on the plans or approved shop drawings, will not be permitted.

• Coatings
  Fabricated steel products may be painted or galvanized: Steel products shall be galvanized after fabrication and shall conform to ASTM A 123. If painting is required, a black bituminous coating is applied.
